Note from the Roatan
Marine Park:
Dear visitor please
help us protect Roatan's most valuable recourse the coral reef. When
snorkeling or scuba diving please
do not
touch or step on the coral as this will kill it and do not
remove anything other than trash. Do not
buy shells and pieces of coral such as sea fans or jewelry made from
black coral etc. Even though these items are widely available from
street vendors it is illegal.
Locals will harvest anything just to make a little cash today
disregarding the sustainability of their livelihood for the future.
PADI Scuba Dive Instructor Development Course on the Caribbean island of Roatan,
Honduras
Roatan Island,
located on the Caribbean coast of Honduras is the home
for Subway Watersports. We are a PADI 5 Star Instructor
Development Center with locations at Turquoise Bay and Palmetto
Plantation. We offer you a great value in quality training, career
development and rewarding experience becoming a PADI Open Water
Scuba Instructor.
During
the last few years, over 70% of the instructor candidates on Roatan
chose Subway Watersports IDC because of “word of mouth”
recommendations from previous students. It was more than just the
quality program provided through PADI. It also centered around our
career development program, reputation, and our staff’s love for
diving. Many Divemaster interns have found our IDC to be a value
proposition they could not resist and continued their education
through the instructor level.
We believe in keeping our
IDC classes small (6 candidates maximum) to facilitate personal
interaction and to provide any special one-on-one attention that a
candidate may need or desire to develop experience.
Depending upon the
candidates’ experience and certification level, we are able to offer
specialized packages to cater to what you need and want.
Our IDC normally runs for
12 days, which allows some flexibility in the scheduling to
accommodate “free days” just to go diving on Roatan's spectacular
coral reef and hone your skills. This way it is not a 24/7
experience in the class room. Typically, we conduct the Assistant
Instructor segment first followed by the Emergency First Response
Instructor Course and then conclude with the Open Water Scuba
Instructor segment. We are offering the new PADI IDC curriculum to
our candidates.
With this approach, we can tailor the
program so that candidates who already have elements of the IDC such
as Assistant Instructor (AI), EFR Instructor (EFRI) ratings or did
the
IDC eLearning
can join in later in the program and maximize their time.
Alternatively, those who want to take smaller steps and earn the AI
and/or EFRI ratings can do this and join in with a later OWSI
program.
If you have become an Assistant
Instructor under the older IDC curriculum, we are able to help you
bridge the gap and come up to speed with the changes.
As a service to our
candidates, we provide a “Welcome to Roatan” airport/ferry pick up,
2010 Roatan Marine Park pass, diving before and after the IDC, free
use of our dive equipment during training, staff lunches during the
course, free internet at the dive center and intern house, free
accommodation (double occupancy with another PADI pro candidate)
and transport to the IE with full logistical support from the IDC
staff. Should the IE be held on Utila Island there are some extra
charges for this.
Our IDC program is more
than preparation for the Instructor Exam. We believe in career
development and life after the IE. Our focus is upon a real life
application of how you will use your skills in the local environment
and in those areas where you will choose to continue your career.
Here on
the Caribbean island of Roatan, Honduras, we offer you two options.
If you are a Divemaster
with the prerequisite 100 logged dives, you may enroll into the 12
day IDC program which is held monthly. We schedule the IDC to
coincide with an Instructor Examination that is held either in
Roatan or Utila. This helps to maximize your experience and give you
the ability to begin instructing.
Should you feel like you
are not quite ready as a Divemaster and need some more experience or
the ability to log additional dives, we can help you to refresh your
skills and knowledge through our Instructor Internship
program.
If time is a consideration,
we can offer a limited program where you are able to complete the
Assistant Instructor and/or Emergency First Response Instructor.
Because
your time is valuable, PADI has made eLearning another option for
professional candidates. Through this online service you can revise
your Dive Theory or complete about 1/3 of the IDC Theory.
This is a premium service that allows you to learn online at home
and reduce your time in the IDC classroom, where we can spend more
time in the water. If you are interested in this option, click on
the eLearning link. If you decide to do the eLearning you will be
able to spend about 4 days during the IDC fun diving or ask about a
shorter IDC program.
Our IDC gives you the
confidence you will need to be able to teach in a classroom,
confined water, and open water environment. You will be prepared to
offer Adventure dives. Once your teaching status has been granted,
you will be ready to receive your first students.
You will have many
opportunities to develop your skills in class and in the water. We
will conduct workshops in marketing, continuing education, risk
management, counseling, 4 E’s, Discover Scuba Diving,
Ascent/Descent, CESA, Adventure Dives, Rescue, eLearning, Tec
Diving, and doing business with PADI. Since we are a National
Geographic Instructor Development Program you will learn about this
special program.
Last year, PADI changed its
training standards to make the Emergency First Response Instructor
course a prerequisite for the IE. Our training program will give you
practical skills in organizing and marketing training, as well as
positive coaching tips. You will be able to refresh and learn skills
in Primary, Secondary, and Children/Infant Care, as well as AED and
Oxygen administration. When you complete the EFRI course you will
receive the following ratings:
Primary and
Secondary Care Instructor
Care for
Children Instructor
AED & CPR
Instructor
For the last three years,
2008 – 2010, every single one of our IDC candidates have passed the
Instructor Examination on the first attempt (industry average
is 89%). This is a reflection of the level of training and
preparation you receive with us and the efforts of our students.
Many of the candidates
decide to spend another week afterwards to obtain specialty
instructor ratings in preparation for their MSDT. Together with our
Course Director we will plan a program to fit your interest and the
market where you will work. We also work with you to help you in job
placement. The MSDT preparation program helps you to become more
marketable as a prospective employee with a dive center.

prerequisites, materials, and costs of our Instructor Development

We want you to be ready for
the challenges of being a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, wherever
your dreams will take you.
